Background: Natural resources have always been the stepping stone in the advancement of modern medicine and the knowledge of the various traditional system of medicine has played a very crucial role in it.
Objective: The present review describes different pharmacological activities of the phytoconstituents found in the C. sativa.
Result and Discussion: Cannabis sativa L. (C. sativa) contains a vast number of natural compounds. Even though 483 compounds had been isolated since 1980, new compounds kept on being identifying from it every passing year and reached 565 compounds. The major class of active natural product isolated are termed as “Cannabinoids”. These are the class of natural active pharmaceutical ingredients that typically have a C21 terpinophenolic skeleton. C. sativa’s different compounds explored for their different pharmacological activities to prove and validate its traditional uses. Many of these chemical constituents have been reported to have pharmacological activities viz. anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anticancer, neuro-protective and anti-microbial.
Conclusion: C. Sativa can be used as an effective medicine for the treatment of many ailments. However, systematic studies are required to explore its potential.
