Abstract

Despite years of history and countless methodologies, advice and books, Information Technology (IT)
projects keep failing. Implementing an information system is a path full of risks for any organization,
the decision to implement an IS normally follows the need for the organization to improve the
effectiveness and efficiency. The study aims to find out the challenges and success factors in
introducing information systems for students’ online registration. The methodology used in this study
followed a positivist, quantitative approach which is used to test objective theories by examining the
relationship among variables. The target population for this study were first year and fourth year
(BTech) students in the management and project management department of the business faculty.
The challenges and success encountered during registration clearly indicate that South Africa as a
developing country can glean on the studies conducted in developed countries for students’ online
registration. This topic is therefore expected to attract scholars and practitioners within this field, as
more research will be useful.
